At Blue Coat, we believe it is important that all our pupils have the opportunity to experience a broad and balanced curriculum that is enjoyable, challenging and an effective preparation for further study. In Years 7 and 8, pupils study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, French, Latin, Art, Music, Design Technology and Physical Education, with either German or Spanish as a second modern foreign language (MFL). In Year 9, there is the option of continuing with Latin instead of Art, Music or DT. In Years 10 and 11, all pupils study for IGCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Religious Studies (GCSE) and at least one MFL. They also take IGCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, either as separate or combined qualifications. There is a wide range of optional subjects, with pupils being able to choose three subjects from History, Geography, Geology, Computer Science, ICT, Art, Physical Education, Latin, Design Technology, Music and an additional MFL. At A level, students can choose from a range of twenty-four subjects, including subjects most will not have studied before, such as Economics, Government and Politics, Drama and Theatre and Psychology.

The curriculum encompasses not just academic subjects but also Games, Activities and a weekly lesson of PSHE.

Most lessons are taught initially in classes of mixed ability but setting occurs in Mathematics and French in Year 7, Languages in Year 8 and Science in Year 9.

We always seek to stretch and challenge our pupils and our Learning Support department ensures that pupils with specific learning needs are supported effectively.
