Year 13 geologists learn about biostratigraphy

The Geology Department enjoyed their second workshop of the week on March 3rd, as Dan Finucane, Senior Biostratigrapher at BP, came in to support the Year 13 students in their ‘Natural Resources’ unit. Dan spoke about the value of biostratigraphy and how it can be used, along with lithostratigraphy and seismic profiling, to determine the location of oil-bearing rocks. He outlined the careers that BP offer and spoke about the size of the company and the oil industry as a whole. It was particularly interesting to see how life on an oil rig can be both exciting and scary, especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse and the swell reaches over 15m. The students conducted a seismic survey exercise to determine the location of two oil traps and decided which of the rocks given would act as sources, reservoirs and caps. Thanks to Dan for taking the time to come in and speak to the students. There is no doubt that they found the lecture and exercises valuable and enriching.
