Artist Angela Findlay speaks to Sixth Form about prison art therapy

In early October, artist and motivational speaker Angela Findlay was the guest at one of our weekly Sixth Form Specials. Angela spoke passionately about the need to look again at how we rehabilitate our prisoners, giving them productive educational activities and challenging them to think about what they have done, before returning them into society and expecting them not to reoffend.

The stories of her experiences of working within prisons, supported by pictures of the artwork she saw created in her sessions, gave clear examples of how she used art to challenge prisoners to refrain from breaking boundaries, to control their communication and to wait and work through each stage of their artwork to get to the finished piece rather than walking away because there wasn’t the instant gratification that many of them craved. An interesting and thought-provoking session.
