Two Year 7s play in Junior Ryder Cup competition

Year 7 golfers Oliver Bryant and Daniel Fenton played for opposing teams at the Junior Ryder Cup competition at the Downshire Golf Course at the end of September. The boys were chosen according to their ability, from 8-14-year-old players at two golf academies – 12 players to represent the UK (blue) and 12 to represent the USA (red). The competition mirrored the actual Ryder Cup, except that it was played over 9 holes, rather than 18. Practice day was on the Friday evening, Foursomes and Fourballs were played on the Saturday, and the Singles on the Sunday. The coaches stressed the etiquette of golf, and that the competitors played the game with a smile on their faces, and always in a superb spirit.

Europe – Oliver’s team – won the competition this year 14.5-9.5, but the whole event was closer than the score would suggest as 10 of the Singles matches weren’t won until the last hole.
